PC Builder or PC Buyer?

While technology becomes much more expensive and even more difficult aquire, many people that need a new computer are purchasing pre-built systems. Dell, one of the biggest names of the pre-built PC market, has a plethora of options for all consumers. While the company is a giant in the tech world, is Dell a good choice for a new PC?

The silicon shortage has impacted us all, including major Fortune 500 companies. As the consumer, you have a question to ask. “Should I make my own pc? Or should I buy something ready to go out of the box?”. We will discuss the pro’s and con’s of pre-builts as well as custom pc’s.

Pre-built PC’s have been around since the need for them arose in the 1970’s. While rudimentary, these machines provided a significant amount of new options for the everyday person. As times evolved, so did pre-built machines. They allow someone the ability to go to an electronics store, purchase a computer, plug it in and start using it immediately, without the hassle of buying all the parts individually and then putting it all together. These machines come in many different forms and sizes. From desktop towers, to thin and light laptops. They usually incude a one year warranty on the whole system, which can sometimes be extended by purchasing a longer warranty package and can last up to 3 years for a single product.

Pre-built machines take the approach of “One-Size-Fits-Most”. You do have the choice to customize and upgrade parts during the configuration process, but your mileage may vary depending on the company you select when choosing a machine to purchase. Certain parts such as graphics cards might not have the ability to fit within some of the cases made by these companies. Other cases might not have the best airflow or even air filtration, leaving some computers after six months of use to be full of dust and grime from the outside world. This directly affects performance and may cause fatal damage to your computer due to overheating. Yes, pre-builts might look like the better option but in some cases, you might be overpaying to have the luxury of being able to use it right away.

Custom built machines however give you something that companies like Dell, HP, and Lenovo do not give you when you buy a ready to go machine. That is, control. When you build your own PC, you get to choose your own parts, which can save you some money, but more importantly, you get exactly the computer you want, which often times is 100% a one of a kind masterpiece. The downside is having to completely build this machine yourself. If you have not buil your own PC before, then you might be a bit disoriented by how massive the world of PC components is. The process has been simplified by websites like pcpartpicker.com, which allows you to select parts and see if your system is compatible with the parts that you selected. You can also go to a PC Builder in person, and have your machine built by a professional builder to ensure that your computer does everything that you want it to.

People have been building custom PC’s since 1995, meaning that the a large base of knowledge around building is available and allows you to see what others have done for over 25 years. Within the universe of custom machines, you can create a machine that is perfectly suited for your workload and your area of work. It will also look exactly the way that you want it to. From computers that are simple and allow you to do basic tasks, to computers that can play videos in 8K resolution, you have the ability to completely choose everything that your computer can do. Regardless of your wants, prices are going to be the key factor that determines your build. With prices rising on all fronts, a choice is now in a consumer’s lap.

Should I get a pre-built PC? Should I build my own? Should I work with a PC Builder to get the best of both worlds? The final call is to be made by you, the consumer. The benefits and disadvantages all make the choice of what machine you’d like balance both options in complete equilibrium.
